2019 marks the start of a year-long celebration for the town of Cary featuring numerous outdoor living activities and active lifestyle events in accordance with the 40thanniversary of the Cary NC Greenways.
Cary NC Greenways: 40 Years of Active, Outdoor Living
The Town of Cary currently boasts upwards of 30 public parks and natural areas. Additionally, there are more than 70 miles of spectacular greenway trails, plus a number of outdoor special use facilities and sports venues.
For those not familiar with the Cary NC Greenways or a greenway in general, the town’s official website defines a greenway as “a linear parcel of land set aside to preserve open space. Greenways are generally located in floodplain areas, along wooded stream corridors unsuitable for development.” Explaining this with a more local focus, the website added, “Cary’s greenway trails provide access to these pristine areas that otherwise would have been lost.”
Building Open Spaces to Enhance Resident Life
Starting way back in 1980, the town began building the Cary NC greenways, “to bring open spaces within easy walking distance of our homes.” Again, referring to the town website, thy detail the many ways that the Cary NC Greenways can enhance one’s life, listing that they:
• Providing a recreational amenity for walking, jogging, and bicycling in a natural setting remote from traffic
• Preserving pristine open space to enhance Cary’s quality of life
• Linking our neighborhoods with parks, schools, community centers, and other neighborhoods
• Helping control storm water runoff, curb erosion, and minimize flooding which can damage our property
• Improving Cary’s water quality by buffering streams, filtering pollutants, and recharging our groundwater
• Adding value to our property by merit of proximity
Becoming a “Walk-Friendly Community”
